And I pulled that out and unwrapped it, and what the hell was in it? And they said, Well, we cant handle it, George. This was the farmhouse. He used to stay out here. I said, I still have friends that myour parents met before we met. Because, now, they cant tear it down. And I got a big certificate for saving that. And Id go in and Id buy all the liquor with those stamps. I have questions about closets too! Burke: Yes, he did that little sofa there. Or was that brother Ed? And then I shipped it all back home. And right outside the window right here, is a great big round, thing thats all brickgreat big round thing, big as this room, covered-overand thats where all the water from the drain pipe from the roof would go in there and fill it, and it was called a cistern, and that was connected to the kitchen downstairs. I mean, look, theyve been trying to get rid of the carriage horses in the city, for how long now? Q: And you said that you restored the garden there too? Hell utilize every room of the house. Burke: Oh, its in beautiful condition because the guy I told you, Jimmy Pistilli, he had it landmarked. A brooch that I gave Bess? You know, everybody grew up together. So I said, Well, I would have named it The Rossville Inn because it was in Rossville, but he will he loved Bermuda and he wanted Bermuda Inn. So I said, Yes, John, well call it the Old Bermuda Inn. So I bought it. And as you see it today was from me doing all those little things. I slept in it, lived in it, ate in it. But the problem is, its so limited on Staten Island. Thats why I did what I did, because I figured that if anything ever happens to me, all of this, now, will have to stay as it is. Either you buy me out, or I buy you out. Burke: Theyll come in, but youll have to have somebody as a guide. I went to grammar school and high school here. And in order to have food and such, youd have to bring it up the back stairs. And Ill see to it that, financially, things work out for the two of us. And its more expensive to keep her horses there than it was here. I mean, Captains Quarters, instead of building all those condos down there, it would have been beautiful to have another stately home there. Q: You mentioned that the South Shore has changed in the last few years. Thats the usual setup, I think, for historic houses. Youre working too hard. Yes, he helped me with the colors, and this and that, and what I should getgood orientals for the floor, which I had but they werent these. I should really do something to save it. And it just was luck that I had just sold a real estate deal and made a lot of money. And I had this goddamn old sergeant who was going back also, but he was getting out of the service, and he was being discharged. The mansion was gorgeous! So when he left the apartment and came to Staten Island, things started to move back into different sisters again until he was ready to relocate it again. And he saw the way to help out, and I said, well form a board and what well do is well continue to have fundraisers in order to support the house, but we need additional help and support as well.
